The 17^th International Conference on Atomic Physics, ICAP-2000, will be held in the historical building of Scuola dei Marescialli e Brigadieri dei Carabinieri, in Piazza della Stazione, n. 6, in front of the Firenze S.M.N. main Railway Station, close to the city center.

Following the ICAP tradition, the Conference will feature an outstanding program of invited speakers covering the properties of atoms and their interaction with light. There will also be poster sessions for contributed papers. Special emphasis will be put on the advances in laser techniques for precision measurements, the cooling and trapping of atoms, the properties of degenerate quantum gases, matter waves, the use of atomic physics techniques for both fundamental measurements and technological applications, quantum optics and coherence, the impact of Atomic Physics on other disciplines and technologies, such as gravity wave detection.

The Conference Organizers are grateful to the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) for financial support. To secure IUPAP sponsorship, the organizers have provided assurance that ICAP-2000 will be conducted in accordance with IUPAP principles as stated in the ICSU-Document "Universality of Science" (sixth edition, 1989) regarding the free circulation of scientists for international purpose. In particular, no bona fide scientists will be excluded from participation on the grounds of national origin, nationality, or political considerations unrelated to science. A limited budget is available for the support of participants who do not have other sources of funding.

The ICAP-2000 Conference has been included into the EUROCONFERENCE list. Young researchers fulfilling the requirements of European Community on this matter can apply for support.
